In 1977, in Craiova, construction of an ultra-modern industrial factory for small litrage motor cars begun. Based on a contract with the French company Citroen, the company Oltcit (its name came from the county Olt, and Citroen) was created. The manufacturing process of Oltcit motor car was conceived at the level of 1978 top technology, but due to some delays, production started in 1981. The type was produced in three versions: Club, Special, and Axel 12 TRS (for export). The bodywork derived from Visa type of Citroen company, and was a coach type with two doors and hayon. That was common for all the versions, but the equipment level differed. All engine types were built on boxer solution, air-cooled.

Special - this was the economical type. The engine had two cylinders, 652 cc, 34 HP, 120 km/h, 5.7 l consumption, and was equipped with electronic ignition. This type has been withdrawn from production after some years, due to reduced request.
Club - the basic type. Its engine had 4 cylinders, 1,129 cc, 56 HP, 149 km/h, 6.7 l consumption. It was also built - after 1989 - as a pick-up version. At TIB '89 was exhibited a prototype of Oltcit Cabrio.

A four-door prototype named Oltina was also exhibited at TIB '89. A fastback break prototype based on Oltcit was made by Sbarro. Before 1989, from Club emerged the RM (Romanian modified) and RT (Entirely Romanian)versions. These types had brakes and some parts from Dacia 1310, but the overall quality wasn't good at all. After 1989, the contract with Citroen expired, so the name Oltcit was changed in Oltena. This type continued to be manufactured until the contract with Daewoo (the Oltena name changed in Rodae) company was signed, and it went through a face-lift and was equipped with a 1,300 cc engine and 5 speeds gearbox.
Axel 12 TRS - type aimed for export (1,299 cc and 5 speeds gearbox). Differs from the other versions through performances and endowments
